(German/English) 10. Juni 2024 – US Parole Commission Hearing: A special song for Leonard on YouTube (Premiere)

German: Anlässlich des U.S. Parole Commissionn Hearings zu Leonard Peltier am 10. Juni 2024 zeigen wir an diesem Tag einen Song, der auf zwei Gedichten Leonard Peltiers basiert und mit Leonards Genehmigung textlich und durch einen Refrain erweitert wurde. (siehe weiter unten folgenden Text)
In Europa haben viele Menschen und Gruppen an der aktuellen Parole-Kampagne der Initiative EUROPE FOR PELTIER 2024 COALITION teilgenommen. Hierzu werden wir ebenfalls in den kommenden Tagen eine VideoSlide-Präsentation auf YouTube veröffentlichen. Den Link geben wir über unsere Website dann bekannt. Teilnehmende Gruppen an der aktuellen Kampagne waren u.a. European Alliance for the Self Determination of Indigenous PeopleS, Tokata-LPSG RheinMain e. V., Menschenrechte 3000 e. V., AGIM e. V., AKIM (Österreich), ASNAI e. V., GfbV, Amnesty International Reg. Düsseldorf, Incomindios (Schweiz), Bundesweites Netzwerk gegen die Todesstrafe, Centro di ricerca per la pace (Italien), Verein Respirare von Viterbo (Italien), CSIA-NITASSINAN (Frankreich), Comitato di solidarietà con Leonard Peltier (Italien). Innerhalb der letzten Tage wurden 222 Briefe sowie Unterschriftenlisten mit 687 Unterschriften an die U.S. Parole Commission und in Cc an Peltiers Anwälte geschickt. Außerdem wurden im gleichen Zeitraum ca. 150 Postkarten an das Weiße Haus mit der Bitte um Begnadigung Peltiers verschickt. Zusätzlich nahmen viele Europäer auch an weiteren Petitionen teil, so von Amnesty International, Change.Org., NDN Collective sowie AIM-GGC/LPLP. Wir danken nicht nur all denen, die sich mit ihrem Namen für Leonard Peltiers Freiheit eingesetzt haben. Wir danken an dieser Stelle ganz besonders den Aktiven in den genannten sozialen Bewegungen und NGOs für ihr Engagement und ihre Bereitschaft damit grenzenlos eine gemeinsame solidarische Botschaft europaweit an die U.S. Parole Commission sowie die Verantwortlichen aus Justiz und Politik in den USA zu vermitteln: im Name von Freiheit, Gerechtigkeit und Menschlichkeit – entlassen Sie bitte endlich Leonard Peltier aus der Haft!

English: On the occasion of the U.S. Parole Commission hearing on Leonard Peltier on 10 June 2024, we will be showing a song based on two poems by Leonard Peltier, with lyrics and a chorus added with Leonard’s permission. (see text below)
In Europe, many people and groups have taken part in the current slogan campaign of the EUROPE FOR PELTIER 2024 COALITION initiative. We will also be publishing a video slide presentation on YouTube in the coming days. We will then announce the link on our website. Participating groups in the current campaign included the European Alliance for the Self Determination of Indigenous PeopleS, Tokata-LPSG RheinMain e. V., Menschenrechte 3000 e. V., AGIM e. Within the last few days, 221 letters and signature lists with 687 signatures were sent to the U.S. Parole Commission and in Cc to Peltier’s lawyers. In addition, about 150 postcards were sent to the White House during the same period asking for Peltier’s pardon. In addition, many Europeans also took part in other petitions, such as those from Amnesty International, Change.Org, NDN Collective and AIM-GGC/LPLP. We would like to thank not only all those who have put their name to a petition in favour of Leonard Peltier’s freedom. We would especially like to take this opportunity to thank the activists in the social movements and NGOs mentioned above for their commitment and their willingness to convey a common message of solidarity across Europe to the U.S. Parole Commission and those responsible for justice and politics in the USA: in the name of freedom, justice and humanity – please finally release Leonard Peltier from prison!

Am 28. Mai 2024 kam es mal wieder zu einem spontanen und zuvor nie gemeinsam eingeübten Song, den der Menominee – Musiker Wade Fernandez und ich im Offenbacher KJK Sandgasse aufführten. In den vergangenen 20 Jahren hatte ich über ein halbes Dutzend Songs dem indigenen politischen Gefangenen Leonard Peltier gewidmet. So anlässlich Leonards 60. Geburtstag 2004 den Song “Song for Leonard” oder anlässlich des 40. Haftjahres “40 Years”. Es folgten weitere Titel wie “Pine Ridge 75”, “A Rock on the Rock”, “45 Years of Injustice”, “How Can You Dare?” , “Rise Up for Peltier”, “STOLEN Part 2”, “Wounded Knee Too”. Doch waren bislang diese Songs Eigenkompositionen, ist dies bei dem vorliegenden Song “We are not separate” etwas anders. Inspiriert durch die Anfrage eines italienischen Musikers, ob dieser ein Gedicht Peltiers als Lied nutzen könne, hatte ich Leonard gebeten, zwei seiner Gedichte, DIFFERENCE und WE ARE NOT SEPARATE, verwenden zu dürfen, um daraus einen einzigen Song zu machen und dabei Leonards Lyrics noch einige meiner eigenen Worte sowie einen Refrain hinzuzufügen. Nachdem Leonard mir sein Okay gab und ich ihm den neuen Text zuschickte, sozusagen nun unserem gemeinsamen Text, hatte er mir erneut sein Okay gegeben. Hier also die Premiere mit dem Menominee-Musiker Wade Fernandez: gewidmet Leonard und allen Menschen, die für eine menschlichere und gerechtere Zukunft und den Schutz von Mutter Erde kämpfen.

On 28 May 2024, Menominee musician Wade Fernandez and I once again performed a spontaneous song that we had never rehearsed together before at the KJK Sandgasse in Offenbach. Over the past 20 years, I have dedicated over half a dozen songs to the indigenous political prisoner Leonard Peltier. For example, the song “Song for Leonard” on the occasion of Leonard’s 60th birthday in 2004 or “40 Years” on the occasion of his 40th year in prison. This was followed by other titles such as “Pine Ridge 75”, “A Rock on the Rock”, “45 Years of Injustice” and “How Can You Dare?” , “Rise Up for Peltier”, “STOLEN Part 2”, “Wounded Knee Too”. But while these songs were previously original compositions, the song “We are not separate” is a little different. Inspired by a request from an Italian musician to use one of Peltier’s poems as a song, I asked Leonard if I could use two of his poems, DIFFERENCE and WE ARE NOT SEPARATE, to make a single song out of them, adding some of my own words and a chorus to Leonard’s lyrics. After Leonard gave me his OK and I sent him the new lyrics, our joint lyrics so to speak, he gave me his OK again. So here is the premiere with Menominee musician Wade Fernandez: dedicated to Leonard and all people who are fighting for a more humane and just future and the protection of Mother Earth.
