Bei aller Hoffnung, für alle Unterstützer*innen Leonard Peltiers, seine Familie und Freunde, seine Anwälte und auch für Leonard selbst war diese ablehnende Entscheidung nicht überraschend. Doch wenn man sich zurücklehnt, all die Implikationen und Konsequenzen der Bewährungsablehnung sich genau überlegt, dann könnte man heulen, schreien, vor Wut und Zorn explodieren. Es ist wie ein Déjà-vu. 2009, als die USPC eine Bewährungsfreilassung Peltiers ablehnte und dabei formulierte, dass Peltier 2024 erneut einen Bewährungsantrag auf Freilassung stellen könne, kommentierte ich dies öffentlich als zynisch und unmenschlich, denn dann wäre Peltier, würde er denn noch leben, fast 80 Jahre alt und wäre über 48 Jahre in Haft, für eine Straftat, die er nicht begangen hat und für die es auch keine Schuldbeweise gegen ihn gäbe. Dies sei Todesstrafe mit anderen Mitteln. Dem ist 2024 nicht viel hinzuzufügen. Doch die erneute Bewährungsablehnung und deren Ergänzung sind an Unmenschlichkeit, Barbarei, Ungerechtigkeit und Zynismus kaum zu toppen: 2039, falls Leonard Peltier noch am Leben wäre, könne er einen erneuten Antrag auf Bewährung stellen. Dann wäre Leonard 94 Jahre alt und 63 Jahre inhaftiert.
Wir verstehen alle, die nun am liebsten Feuer und Flamme spuken würden. Auch in uns brennen Trauer, Wut und Zorn. Auch wir wissen, welch widerliches und verlogenes Spiel das FBI betreibt, um Leonard in Haft sterben zu lassen. Und nur um davon abzulenken, dass die wahren Reservations Mörder aus den Reihen der Polizei und FBI kamen bzw. durch FBI und Polizei aufgerüstet und zum Morden ermuntert wurden. Und nur um davon abzulenken, dass das FBI seine beiden Agenten Coler und Williams wissentlich hat in den Tod fahren lassen. An den Händen der Verantwortlichen an all den Morden an über 50 Lakota in den 70er Jahren klebt bis heute Blut. Es ist dieses Blut an den Händen der Justiz, der Polizei, des FBI und der Politik, dass mit den unbewiesenen Schuldvorwürfen gegen Leonard Peltier reingewaschen werden soll.
Wir sind jetzt ganz besonders mit unseren Gedanken bei Leonard. Er braucht jetzt ganz besonders unsere Hilfe. Er braucht massenhafte Solidarität und professionelle Hilfe und Unterstützung. Wie schrieb er selbst in seinem Statement zum Oglala Commemoration Day am 26. Juni 2024, “es ist erst vorbei, wenn es vorbei ist”. In diesem Sinne: Aufstehen, Kopf hoch, Trauer, Wut und Zorn in Energie und kluges Handeln verwandeln. Der Kampf um Leonards Freiheit geht weiter, jetzt erst recht und jetzt mehr als je zuvor.

Despite all hope, for all Leonard Peltier’s supporters, his family and friends, his lawyers and also for Leonard himself, this negative decision came as no surprise. But if you sit back and think about all the implications and consequences of the parole denial, you could cry, scream, explode with rage and anger. It’s like a deja vue. In 2009, when the USPC denied Peltier parole, stating that Peltier could reapply for parole in 2024, I publicly commented that this was cynical and inhumane, because if Peltier were still alive, he would be almost 80 years old and in prison for over 48 years for a crime he did not commit and for which there would be no evidence of guilt against him. This would be the death penalty by other means. There is not much to add to this in 2024. However, the renewed rejection of parole and its amendment can hardly be topped in terms of inhumanity, barbarism, injustice and cynicism: in 2039, if Leonard Peltier were still alive, he could reapply for parole. Leonard would then be 94 years old and imprisoned for 63 years.
We understand all those who would now like to spit fire and flame. We too are burning with grief, anger and rage. We also know what a disgusting and dishonest game the FBI is playing to let Leonard die in custody. And just to distract from the fact that the real reservation murderers came from the ranks of the police and FBI, or rather were armed and encouraged to murder by the FBI and police. And just to distract from the fact that the FBI knowingly let its two agents Coler and Williams drive to their deaths. There is still blood on the hands of those responsible for all the murders of over 50 Lakota in the 1970s. It is this blood on the hands of the judiciary, the police, the FBI and politicians that is to be washed clean with the unproven accusations of guilt against Leonard Peltier.
Our thoughts are especially with Leonard right now. He especially needs our help right now. He needs mass solidarity and professional help and support. As he himself wrote in his statement on Oglala Commemoration Day on June 26, 2024, “it’s not over until it’s over”. With this in mind: stand up, keep your head up, turn grief, anger and rage into energy and smart action. The fight for Leonard’s freedom continues, now more than ever.
