Erneuter Aufruf zur Teilnahme an Briefaktion für Leonard Peltier

Der Termin der Bewährungsanhörung für Leonard Peltier vor der U.S. Parole Commission rückt näher. Mittlerweile wird die von uns in Kooperation mit Leonard Peltiers Anwälten initiierte Briefaktion nicht nur hierzulande immer weiter beworben sondern vor allem auch bei unseren Kooperationspartnern in Italien. Und auch aus Österreich und der Schweiz haben uns erste Briefe erreicht.

Die Kooperationspartner der Düsseldorfer Mahnwachen haben nun den Aufruf ihrerseits erneuert. Wir verbreiten hier den Text, der uns heute erreichte. Vielen Dank.

Liebe Menschen !

Achtundvierzig Jahre im Gefängnis und jeder Tag war Kampf. Jetzt ist es ein Kampf um die letzten Lebenstage. Am 10.06.2024 tagt die Bewährungskommission. Danach hat sie dreißig Tage Zeit zu entscheiden.
Leonard ist krank und erschöpft.
Die Zeit drängt und ich möchte Euch nicht noch eine ellenlange eMail zumuten.
Falls Ihr es noch nicht getan habt, nehmt Euch bitte ein paar wenige Minuten Zeit, kopiert den Beispieltext (siehe unten) in eine eMail, ergänzt Eure Adresse und Euren Namen und sendet sie an die Parole Commission im US Department of Justice  USParole.questions@usdoj.gov und in Kopie an lpsgrheinmain@aol.com !

Natürlich geht es auch noch anders/besser/umständlicher/wirkungsvoller/erfolgversprechender/langsamer.

Dear honorable U.S. Parole Commission,

 I am writing to you regarding to the parole hearing of Mr. Leonard Peltier, Federal Prisoner #89637-132 USP Coleman I, Florida, in June.  On the occasion of this hearing, I would ask you to urgently consider the following circumstances when assessing his case and ask you to release Mr. Leonard Peltier from prison on parole.

Leonard Peltier will be 80 years old this year and has been ill for many years, sometimes seriously and life-threatened. This is his 49^th year in prison. He is evaluated as a model prisoner by the BOP.

He currently needs a walk-assistant and his eyesight is deteriorating. He is denied immediate and adequate treatment and everyday life in prison is becoming increasingly difficult for him to cope with.

Let me tell you some details:
He has been suffering from jaw problems for decades and currently also has dental problems. Eating normal food is therefore difficult for him. He does not receive adequate dental treatment. He almost bled to death during an operation and was in a coma. Peltier had a stroke and suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems. The heart problems made a heart surgery necessary in 2017.

Since 2011, Peltier has been suffering from pain in the prostate area, the causes are unknown to us.
Peltier was diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which has not yet been operated. There is a risk that Peltier will bleed to death internally within minutes if the aneurysm bursts.
Leonard Peltier increasingly suffers from movement and balance problems. This is exacerbated by the constant lockdown and the associated lack of movement options. He is increasingly dependent on a walking aid.
Peltier’s eyesight has been deteriorating dramatically for some time. Adequate ophthalmologic treatment, which is urgently needed, is not being provided.

Because of Peltier’s advanced age and his precarious health situation alone, and due to the prison conditions that have a significant negative impact on these two aspects, due to constant lockdowns and inadequate medical care, Leonard Peltier’s civil and human rights are considered to have been violated, as summarized by the UN Working Group on Discriminatory Detention 2021 in a 17-page report.

The listed diseases , together with his advanced age, will substantially diminish his ability to function in a correctional facility. Because these are partly age-related diseases that are expected to deteriorate, conventional treatment promises no substantial improvement to his physical health. Furthermore the conditions of imprisionment (for example lock-downs) permanently worsen his state of health.

I therefore ask you, the US Parole Commission, to release Leonard Peltier from prison on parole as soon as possible. For humanitarian reasons alone, the Commission should decide to take this step. Many hundreds and thousands of people around the world would welcome this decision as a decision of humanity and justice, but also as a decision of reconciliation with the indigenous population of the USA.
